The artwork belongs to the famous series, Los Desastres de la Guerra realized during the years of the Independence Spanish War, published in 1863 and representing the horrors and the despair of the War.
Titled on the lower central margin: Para es habeis nacido (For this reason you were born).
Numbered on the lower left corner, etching n. 12.

As part of the representation of the horrors of war and after the representation of violence against women, Goya records the first series of lifeless bodies, among which a man rises who, vomiting blood from his mouth, will soon join them. The use of a desolate landscape with no horizon reinforces its pathetic nature.
