Sketch for a Sign
Sketch for a Sign is a very graceful drawing representing the sign of a bar. This artwork made by an anonymous artist in the first half of the 20 th century was applied on a slightly darker cardboard (12.5 x 9.5 cm). The state of preservation is good, although there is a fungal foxing on the back of the cardboard. In the drawing, there are some inscriptions in pencil, incompletely readable: “ Biere Vienne ” at the top, and “ Fonta /Hall… ” at the bottom.
The artwork is overall very pleasant. The sign, in the shape of an emblem, indicates the entrance of the bar with various characters and a hostess in Tyrolese costume, and is decorated with flowers and plants. A genre scene typical of the Austrian culture and taste of that historical period.
