The German National Socialist Workers' Party (NSDAP ) under the dark-charismatic Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, transforming the German Reich in the period 1933-1945 into a totalitarian " Leader State" , Nazi Germany or Third Reich, completely inspired by the National Socialist ideology, anti-Semitism and pan-Germanism. With the invasion of Poland, in 1939 it triggered the Second World War.
Hitler and the NSDAP operated very quickly to gain absolute control of the German state and eliminate any political party opponents. On February 27, 1933, a devastating fire broke out at the Reichstag headquarters. The Nazis, looking for a pretext to ban an anti-Bolshevik crusade and making the Left parties illegal, blamed the Communists for arresting the KPD leaders, closing their headquarters and prohibiting the demonstrations. The Reichstag was restored, but Hitler gave a mandate to the architect Albert Speer to build a new chancellery, the "Neue Reichskanzlei", in whose garden the bunker was dug and will see the last hours of Hitler and the party. Rallies, on the other hand, were held at the Sportpalast.
Hitler took the opportunity to convince President von Hindenburg to sign a decree ( Reichstagsbrandverordnung, "Reichstag Fire Decree") which, suspended most of the human rights sanctioned by the constitution of the Weimar Republic. A subsequent integration allowed preventive detention for all communist leaders and those who somehow were hostile to the National Socialist Party. In this new and favorable condition - with political opponents incarcerated or leaving Germany - Hitler was preparing to hold a new election for March 1933 in order to reach an absolute majority in the Reichstag and thus be able to modify the constitution. The elections predictably saw the NSDAP triumph, obtaining 43.9% of the votes. Together with the DNVP's nationalist allies the fascists obtained a simple parliamentary majority with 51.8% of the votes.
The next step of the NSDAP for the establishment of the dictatorship was the approval of the Decree of full powers which guaranteed Hitler and his cabinet of government to promulgate laws, effectively depriving parliament of its institutional role.
