After initial artistic education in his family, Louis Emile Adan began his art studies in 1850. He enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, a pupil of François-Édouard Picot and Alexandre Cabanel, and attended it from 1786 to 1866. With the support of his teachers Adan, in 1863, for the first time, participated in the annual exhibition of the Salon de Paris. His works were well received by the official art critic and Adan took part in these exhibitions until shortly before his death. It took him a few years to find his style and in addition to the oil painting was the watercolor a focus of his work. In addition, he has been able to make a name for himself over the years with the illustration of books.
