Japanese Buddha’s Head - SOLD

Buddha’s Head is an original sculpture made in Java during the 1920s and 1930s.

Original andesite rock.

The head of Buddha has an oval shape with half-closed eyes, aquiline nose and sinuous lips. The hair is tied in wide locks. The ear lobes are excessively elongated. All these features create a deep meditative expression. The material is a particular typology of stone: andesite, an effusive igneous rock.

Javanese origin artworks are among the well-known in Indonesia and the whole archipelago. The famous Javanese puppetry culture was influenced by Hindu and Buddhist religions. The repertoire stories, lakon, are mostly based on epics from Asia: the Indian " Ramayana " and " Mahabharata ". These epic poems and stories influence puppetry as well as the traditional classical Javanese dance. Some influences also come from Ismal and Europe.
