Gloria Davy (Brooklyn, 1931 – Geneva, 2012) was a Swiss born American soprano who had an active international career in operas and concerts from the 50s to 80s. A talented soprano pushed, has been widely acclaimed for her interpretation of the role of the title in Aida by Giuseppe Verdi; a role he has performed in many of the best theaters in the world operates. It was in particular the first black artist to play the role of Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1958. While performed a wide repertoire, was particularly admired for her interpretations of twentieth century music, including works by Richard Strauss, Benjamin Britten and Paul Hindemith. Davy was part of the first generation of African-American singers to achieve great success and is considered part of an instrumental group of interpreters who helped to break down barriers of racial prejudice in the opera world. It was noted for the first time in 1952 when he won the Marian Anderson Award, and later as Bess in an international tour of Porgy and Bess from 1954 to 1956. The opera and concert engagements with major orchestras and opera houses in United States and Europe soon followed. In 1959 he married a Swiss stockbroker Herman Penningsfield; then he left New York to live in Geneva, Switzerland. From that moment his singing career took place primarily in Europe, with only occasional appearances in the United States
