Sadayoshi Utagawa was a printmaker and poet and presumably a pupil of Kunisada Utagawa. The first characters Sada support this assumption. It was the habit that the master gave his young apprentices an artist name that was put together from the second part of the master's and the first part of the pupil's original or adopted name. It is known that Sadayoshi worked in Osaka where the Utagawa School of printmakers, at home in Edo, maintained a kind of 'branch'. The style of the woodblock prints by Sadayoshi that we have seen so far, is quite typical for the Utagawa School.
