Marcel Gromaire (Noyelles-sur-Sambre, 1892 - Paris, 1971)
Of French and Flemish origins, Marcel Gromaire became passionate about painting and, as a self-taught, he cultivated his passion. Subsequently, he perfected himself at the Montparnasse Academy and attended the atelier of Matisse's students. He was forced to interrupt the activity due to the outbreak of the First World War, during which he enlisted in the transalpine army.
In the first post-war period, his style approached that of Léger and his themes those of Matisse. His style was defined expressionistic, but Gromaire did not exclude from the spirit of his works the innovative European tendencies, so that he could approach it at the school of Lhote and La Fresnaye.
In 1937, he decorated the Pavilion of Sèvres at the Universal Exposition in Paris and began a series of tapestry cartoons, presenting himself as an innovative master of modern tapestry. He worked at the Aubusson Manufacture, along with Lurçat.
He took part in the 1959 Paris Biennial. He was also appreciated as an illustrator of books, including the Petit poèmes en prose by Baudelaire.
