Giacomo Antonio Ceruti (Milan, 1698 - 1777) in the first half of the XVIII Century. Giacomo Antonio Ceruti, known as Pitocchetto, son of Giuseppe Ceruti, was born in Lombardy around 1700. Nothing is known about the place where he was born, maybe Milan or Brescia.
Nothing is known about the artist's first formation; the first work that has been survived is the Portrait of Count Fenaroli, signed and dated 1724. Around 1728 he was in Brescia, and Maccarinelli lists a series of paintings that the mayor Andrea Memo, shortly before his mandate expired (1728), he had him paint in some rooms of the praetorian palace; these works were all destroyed or dispersed at the end of the XVIII Century.
In 1734 he signed and gave the Madonna del Rosario for the church of S. Maria di Artogne, a work of no great level, with an uncertain composition, of Lombard ancestry. It is assumed that in all these years the artist has lived in Brescia. Probably in 1734, he stayed for some time in Gandino: in the contract stipulated on 1 March 1734 between the regents of the church of S. Maria di Gandino and Ceruti it is said that the clients had to give the painter convenient accommodation for all the time he would work for the church. Two large canvases by the author are still preserved in the church: the Birth and the Transit of the Virgin.
