Henri Theodore Fantin-Latour (Grenoble, 1836 - Buré, Orne, 1906), French painter and lithographer, well-known for his group portraits of Parisian artists, writers, and musicians and for flower and still-lifes paintings. In 1854, he began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and, for the G. Coubet ‘s atelier, he spent much time copying the old masters of the 16th and 17th century in the Musée du Louvre . Although the French painter made friends with many young artists who would later become associated with Impressionism, including J. Whistler and Manet, Fantin-Latour preserved his style.
In England, Fantin-Latour had a great success: Whistler did his best to increase Fantin-Latour's possibilities for professional recognition, and his still-lifes sold so well that they were " practically unknown in France during his lifetime ". In addition to his realistic paintings and still-lifes, Fantin-Latour created imaginative lithographs inspired by his passion for the music of some of the greatest classical composers, such as Schumann, Wagner and Berlioz . Today some of his most famous artworks are on display at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
