Ballerina di Flamenco
Flamenco Dancer is a beautiful watercolor and gouache on paper of the late XIX and early XX century. The signature , painted on the lower left, is partially unreadable and does not allow the author’s identification, by all means valid and very likely Spanish. Below the signature, the painted inscription “ Roma ” appears, indicating the place where the work was realized. At the bottom, the paper sheet was recently glued onto a yellow cardboard that, folded and trimmed, works as a passepartout.
Excellent conditions of preservation, the quality of the painting is high, the colors are bright in the rendering of the fabrics that compose the lovely costume of the dancer, portrayed standing up in a three-quarters pose.
The description is very precise and detailed: from the hairstyle with rolled-up braids, to the coral earrings, to the red-velvet mantilla, richly hemmed with black and red polka dots, to the floral shawl with long white fringes, to the fan closed in her hand, to the floral skirt with apron.
The painting is a precious work, both for its folkloristic aspect and as proof of costume history.
