Nicola Carnevali (1811-1885):  Born in Rome in 1811 by Pancrazio and Caterina Gentili, he worked as an architect in his own city between 1840 and 1868. His activity was mainly expressed in restoration and renovation of the most important Roman theaters. The first work, however, that gave him fame was the raising of the two obelisks in the villa of Alessandro Torlonia, on the Via Nomentana. The two obelisks, worked with granite taken from the Baveno quarry and brought to the mouth of the Tiber by the commander A. Cialdi in 1839 (see P. Della Torre, A. Cialdi…, in Annali lateranensi, VI [1942], were erected in Villa Torlonia respectively on 4 June and 26 July 1842. The technical difficulties, brilliantly overcome by the architect in the presence of a great multitude, set him up for success. The Diary of Rome, in numbers 46 and 50 of the same year, as well as pamphlets and sermons written on the subject by F. Gasparoni, A. Leonini Pignotti and A. G. Ballin were widely treated.
