Portrait of Woman

Portrait is a splendid lithograph realized by the French painter and engraver M. Ernest Laurent from one of his own works exhibited at the Salon in 1901. On the lower left, below the image, “ Gazette des Beaux- Arts” is printed; on the lower right “ Imp. D’Art A. Clot, Paris ”; on the lower center “ Portrait/ Lithographie de M. Ernest Laurent d’apres son tableau / (Societé des Artistes français – Salon de 1901) ”.

The conditions of the work are excellent. The paper presents an irregular cut on the left margin, and the print is not perfectly centered on the piece of paper.

Portrait is a beautiful artwork in which, with the lithograph technique, the artist managed to express a breakdown of the typical image of the Divisionist technique, tough keeping all the Impressionist expressiveness in the portrait of this lovely and smiling girl.

M. Ernest Laurent was an exponent of Neo-Impressionism and Divisionism, pupil of Ernest Hébert and friend of Georges Seurat. In 1889, Laurent won the second prize at the Prix de Rome and in 1890 he arrived at the French Academy in Rome. From Rome, he went to visit Assisi, where he had a mystical experience that strongly influenced his art, having focused on religious themes since then.
